“At least once in life, it’sgood to start at zero...”
This was astatement of Anni Albers, uttered after fleeing Nazi persecution and finding anew life in the USA in 1933. This publication introduces the work of three prominent Bauhaus designers, Anni Albers, Otti Berger, and Lilly Reich, as well as that of the Austrian/British ceramist Lucie Rie. They all stood at the forefront of the avant-garde, but with the advent of the Nazi regime had to re-invent their careers. They persevered and succeeded, with the exception of Otti Berger, whose career was cut tragically short when she was murdered in Auschwitz.Starting at Zerois the first study to focus on the difficulties these female pioneering designers and artists had to confront in the 1930–40s , amidst the rising wave of Nazism in Europe. They never resigned, again and again starting at zero in their personal and professional lives, in aworld that was broken. Today, their work, richly documented in this book, undoubtedly belongs among the most striking and enduring legacies of modern design of the 20th century.
