Since 1936, the War Museum 1866 in Chlum has maintained the memory of this brutal conflict, which transformed both the borders and the balance of power in Europe. The purpose of the museum and its exhibition (which was last innovated between 2010 and 2013) is to explain the roots of the conflict, its progress, its consequences, and to serve as a remembrance of the fallen.
The text in the book was intended to supplement the exhibition itself, with the decisive Battle of Hradec Králové on 3 June 1866 taking its primary focus. It also discusses the larger context, origins, and consequences of the conflict. The publication was intentionally composed in such a way that it could also serve as a standalone piece independently of the exhibition itself. Its purpose is to provide the reader with a basic overview of the history of the Austro-Prussian War, regardless of the extent of their prior knowledge of the subject.
