The genus Palaminus was erected by ERICHSON (1839:29) in a key for the tribe Pinophilini in his „Genera et species staphylinorum“ and the first four species of the genus were described in a later part of the same book: P. pilosus, P. piceus, P. variabilis (all from Colombia), and P. testaceus from Pennsylvania (Erichson 1840: 682ff). The type species (P. pilosus Erichson, 1840) was designated by DUPONCHEL (1841: 57). The first two species from the study area were described by KRAATZ(1859: 153f): P. ceylanensis from Sri Lanka and P. indicusfrom „India orientali“. The latter type locality probably refers to Myanmar (HERMAN 2010: 56; FRISCH 2005: 77). FAUVEL (1878) described P. novaeguineae, the first species from New Guinea and later, FAUVEL (1897) described P. limbifer from the same island. During the first half of the 20th century, additional species were described by BERNHAUER (1914, 1943): P. philippinus Bernhauer, 1914 from the Philippines and P. spiniventris Bernhauer, 1943 from Taiwan; by FAUVEL (1903, 1904a, b): P. truncatus from south India, P. simoni from Sri Lanka and south India, and P. pennifer from Madagascar, Java and the Philippines. The major contribution describing new species was made by CAMERON (1918, 1920, 1924, 1928, 1930, 1931, 1937, 1941, 1943, 1949, 1952) who described 22 species: P. parvus Cameron, 1918 from Singapore, P. bryanti Cameron, 1920 from Singapore, P. morosus Cameron, 1924 from India, P. borneensis Cameron, 1928, P. germanus Cameron, 1928 (both from Borneo: Sarawak), P. japonicus Cameron, 1930 from Japan, P. andrewsi Cameron, 1931, P. nigropiceus Cameron, 1931, P. nilgiriensis Cameron, 1931, P. rufus Cameron, 1931 (all from India), P. monticola Cameron, 1931 from Sri Lanka, P. birmanus Cameron, 1931 from Myanmar, P. bicolor Cameron, 1937, P. cheesmanae Cameron, 1937, P. kokodanus Cameron, 1937, P. papuanus Cameron, 1937, P. uniformis Cameron, 1937 (all from New Guinea), P. flavoguttatus Cameron, 1941 from the Philippines, P. bivittatus Cameron, 1943 from New Guinea, P. formosae Cameron, 1949 from Taiwan and Japan (Ryukyu Islands), P. bivittatus var. obliteratus Cameron, 1952, P. varipennis Cameron, 1952 (both from New Guinea). SCHEERPELTZ (1957) described P. buehleri and P. sumbaensis (both from Sumba), and later SCHEERPELTZ (1965) described the species P. malaisei from Myanmar.
