This was the pet name of Elisabeth Giselle Countess Dubsky, whose life story reads like a novel difficult to put down, set aside, or simply forget. Her memoirs, originally intended only for the immediate family, are a breathtaking witness to the life of a courageous woman swept by the whirlwind of world history. Elisabeth was a scion of an old Czech house of the Dubskys of Trzebomyslic, settled in Moravia since
the sixteenth century. Elisabeth’s ancestors included notable diplomats, soldiers, and politicians. Her great-aunt was the famous German-writing author Marie Ebner-Eschenbach, often compared to our Božena Němcová. The Dubskys and their daughter Elisabeth were German-speaking Moravian patriots.
