The National Institute of Virology and Bacteriology (NIVB) is a unique platform uniting major
virology and bacteriology research groups from eight leading Czech institutions. Its common
goal is to fundamentally advance knowledge of viral and bacterial infections and strengthen
society’s ability to respond effectively to future health threats. The establishment of the
NIVB was driven by the experience gained during the COVID-19 pandemic, which demonstrated
that coordinated and science-based action is key to effectively tackling global health
crises.
In three years, the NIVB has made remarkable progress not only in the development of advanced
antiviral and antibacterial drugs, but also in the research on pathogen-host interactions
and the improvement of prevention strategies. The NIVB project provides a stimulating
environment for sharing of knowledge and expertise across the project consortium improving
the quality of scientific work and the efficiency of using available resources. The NIVB
also plays an important role in educating and developing young scientists, in particular PhD
students, master’s students, and postdoctoral researchers. Here they have the opportunity
to learn state-of-the-art technologies and methodologies, gain experience from working in
excellent research teams, establish contacts with other scientists and thus prepare themselves
for research careers at an international level.
NIVB has become a member of the prestigious international Global Virus Network and is
helping the public authorities of the Czech Republic to address acute epidemiological situations
as well as long-term challenges, including the growing threat of antibiotic resistance
in bacterial pathogens. This publication offers a comprehensive overview of the mission,
structure, objectives, and contributions of the NIVB and highlights its role as a key institute
for understanding and managing infectious diseases with significant health, economic and
societal impacts.
With the establishment of the National Institute of Virology and Bacteriology (NIVB), we
are better prepared to address future epidemics and emerging pathogenic threats. NIVB is
rapidly becoming a respected and equal partner not only within the Czech Republic but also
across the European and global research landscape. This comprehensive publication offers
you a firsthand look at our progress and achievements.
